Terms of Service
Last updated 22 July 2026
These terms cover the Rookspell game and this website. They are written to be read, not to be survived. Playing the game or using this site means you accept them.
Buy the game and you get a personal licence to play it — the game itself remains ours. Play fairly online and do not cheat, harass or exploit other players. Anything you publish to the Workshop stays yours, but you give us permission to show it in game. The game is still in development, so expect things to change. Nothing here takes away consumer rights you have by law.
01Accepting these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and the independent developer trading as 8bitblock ("we", "us"), covering the Rookspell game and this website. By installing or playing Rookspell, or by using this site, you agree to them. If you do not, please do not use the game or the site.
Rookspell is distributed through Steam, so Valve's Steam Subscriber Agreement applies to your purchase and your Steam account as well. Where these terms and Valve's conflict on something Valve controls — payment, refunds, account standing — Valve's terms govern that point.
02Your licence to play
When you buy Rookspell you are buying a licence, not the game itself. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and play Rookspell for your own private, non-commercial enjoyment, on the devices your Steam account permits.
You may not:
- Sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute the game or its files.
- Reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the game, except to the extent the law expressly permits it despite this restriction.
- Strip out or alter any copyright or attribution notices.
- Use the game or its assets in a commercial product of your own.
Streaming and video are welcome. You may record, stream and monetise footage of Rookspell on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube, including with ads or sponsorship, without asking us. Please credit the game by name. This permission covers your own gameplay footage; it does not let you redistribute the game itself or its raw assets.
03Purchases and refunds
All purchases go through Steam. We never handle your payment details. Refunds are administered by Valve under the Steam Refund Policy, and requests should be made through Steam Support rather than to us.
If you are a consumer, any statutory rights you have in your own country — including rights to a remedy for faulty digital content — apply in addition to Steam's policy and are not limited by anything in these terms.
04A game in development
Rookspell is actively being made. Cards get rebalanced, features get added, and things occasionally break. In particular:
- Card effects, rarities and draw odds may change between versions, so a strategy that works today may not survive a balance pass.
- Save data and collection progress should carry forward, but we cannot guarantee it across every future update. If a save format has to change, we will say so in the patch notes.
- Features described on this website or on the Steam page are what we intend to ship, not a contractual promise. Platform support in particular depends on testing that is still under way.
05Playing fairly online
Online play is peer-to-peer between players. There is no referee, so it relies on people behaving. When playing online you agree not to:
- Use cheats, trainers, memory editors or modified clients to gain an advantage.
- Exploit bugs to break the game state for the other player, or deliberately desynchronise a match.
- Interfere with another player's connection, or attempt to disrupt Steam's networking.
- Harass, abuse or impersonate other players, including through your Steam profile name while in a lobby.
- Attempt to identify, track or contact another player against their wishes.
Lobby hosts can remove and block players from their own lobby. Because we run no servers, we cannot ban an account from the game — conduct that breaks Valve's rules should be reported to Steam, and you can always block a user at the Steam level.
06Workshop content you create
Rookspell supports Steam Workshop packs containing cosmetic skins and custom cards. You keep ownership of anything you make.
By publishing a pack you confirm that you have the right to publish everything in it, and you grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to host, display, distribute and reproduce it as necessary to make it work inside the game and to show it in Workshop listings and promotional material for Rookspell. You can withdraw your pack at any time by removing it from the Workshop, which ends that licence going forward.
Do not publish packs that contain material you do not own, that infringe anyone's rights, or that are hateful, harassing, or unlawful. Uploads are also subject to Valve's Steam Workshop Legal Agreement and Steam's content rules, and Valve may remove items independently of us.
Workshop cards are available in single-player and local hot-seat games only. Online matches always deal from the built-in deck, so that both players are playing the same game.
07Other people's content and services
Workshop packs are made by other players. We do not review or endorse them, and we are not responsible for their contents. Install them at your own discretion.
Rookspell is built with the Godot Engine and uses third-party components under their own licences; the applicable notices are included with the game. Links from this site to Steam, GitHub or anywhere else are provided for convenience and do not make us responsible for those destinations.
08Our intellectual property
The Rookspell name, logo, artwork, card text, music, code and design are ours, or used with permission, and are protected by copyright and other laws. Nothing in these terms transfers any of that to you beyond the licence described above and the streaming permission in section 2.
Press and content creators may use the assets published in our press kit for coverage of the game, which is what they are there for.
09Using this website
This site is provided for information about the game. Please do not attempt to disrupt it, scrape it abusively, or use it to distribute anything harmful. The site is a static, open-source project; you can read its source in the repository.
Details on the site — feature lists, system requirements, card text — describe the game as it stands and may change as development continues.
10Warranty disclaimer
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Rookspell and this website are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the game will be uninterrupted or error-free, that defects will be corrected, or that online play will always be available.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties. If you are a consumer in such a place, those exclusions do not apply to you and you keep your statutory rights in full.
11Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data or lost save progress, arising out of your use of Rookspell or this website. Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you actually paid for the game.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded under the law that applies to you.
12Ending the agreement
You may end this agreement at any time by uninstalling the game and no longer using this site. Your licence ends automatically if you materially breach these terms — for example by redistributing the game. Sections that by their nature should survive, such as intellectual property, disclaimers and limitation of liability, continue to apply afterwards.
Removal of the game from your Steam library is a matter for Valve under the Steam Subscriber Agreement.
13Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the game develops. The date at the top of this page changes whenever they do, and the complete revision history is public in the site repository. If a change is significant, we will note it on the Steam page. Continuing to play after a change means you accept the updated terms.
14Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of the country in which the developer is established, and the courts of that country will have jurisdiction over any dispute. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of any mandatory rules of the country where you live, and you may also be entitled to bring proceedings in your local courts.
We would much rather sort out any problem by talking. Please get in touch before anything more formal.
